Rameshwaram has serious mythological significance, it may be scenically well-endowed, but its true character is revealed in its collection of Lord Rama temples, each backed by a story from the epic Ramayana. Lord Rama camped here, worshiped him, solidified his plans to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana, sighed that he had the support of Sugreeva, whose monkey army had built him a bridge of springboards (nullRam Setu) to the Lankan coast, crossed the second side, killed by Ravana, he returned with his wife, worshiped Lord Shiva to absolve himself of any sin he may have committed during this war, took a sacred dip in the sea and built a sand Shivalingam which later became the much revered Ramanathaswamy temple.
